There are different types of visas for people interested in migrating to Australia on temporary and permanent basis. The visas are categorized into sub classes and DIBP describes Australia's permanent immigration program as having two components - Migration, for Skilled, Family and Special Eligibility Stream migrants and Humanitarian, for refugees and others with humanitarian needs.
The Department of Immigration and Border Protection has introduced an online service calledSKILLSELECT in 2012, to enable skilled workers and business people to register their interest to migrate into Australia through the Expression of Interest (EOI)
Potential migrants may also be nominated by state and territory governments, and further invited to make a visa application on successful assessment of EOI.
Skilled migration to Australia is a point based system, where applicants lodge an EOI and are invited to make an application.
