VISA TYPES
There are different types of visas for people interested in migrating to Australia on temporary and permanent basis. The visas are categorized into sub classes and DIBP describes Australia's permanent immigration program as having two components - Migration, for Skilled, Family and Special Eligibility Stream migrants and Humanitarian, for refugees and others with humanitarian needs.
SKILL SELECT
The Department of Immigration and Border Protection has introduced an online service calledSKILLSELECT in 2012, to enable skilled workers and business people to register their interest to migrate into Australia through the Expression of Interest (EOI)
Potential migrants may also be nominated by state and territory governments, and further invited to make a visa application on successful assessment of EOI.
Skilled migration to Australia is a point based system, where applicants lodge an EOI and are invited to make an application.
General Skilled Migration, Business Migration and Employer sponsored visa are now applied through Skill Select
GENERAL SKILLED MIGRATION
Skilled Independent – Subclass 189
Points based visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, a state or territory, or a family member. The visa holder can live and work permanently anywhere in Australia. Application is made through EOI
Skilled Nominated – Subclass 190
Points based visa for skilled workers nominated by a state or territory. The visa holder can live and work permanently anywhere in Australia. Application is made through EOI
Skilled - Nominated or Sponsored(Provisional)(subclass 489)
Points-based visa is for skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory or sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area in Australia. Visa is valid for 4 years and visa holder must live and work in a specified regional area. Application is made through EOI.
EMPLOYEE SPONSORED
Subclass 457 visa
This visa allows a business to employ someone from outside Australia in a skilled job in Australia. Visa holder is allowed to work a maximum of 4 years. Dependents may be included in the application.
Employer Nomination Scheme – Sub class 186
This visa is for skilled workers from outside Australia or skilled temporary residents who live and work in Australia.
Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187)
This visa is for skilled workers from outside Australia or skilled temporary residents who live and work in regional Australia.
BUSINESS VISAS
Business Talent (Permanent) (subclass 132) visa
This visa has 2 streams to make an application
Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) (subclass 188) visa & Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) (subclass 888) visa
Visa which has 3 streams to make an application
Business Innovation – for people who want to own and manage a new or existing business
Investor Stream – for people who make a designated investment in an Australian state or territory and maintain business activity
Significant Investor – for people willing to invest atleast AUD 5 million into complying investments in Australia and maintain business activity.
FAMILY
Family stream migration includes different categories of family migration. This includes visas for children, carer visas, parent visas, aged dependent relative visas.
